Purpose of “Strategy for Process”
No organisation will realise the promise of process unless its overall business strategy embraces, commits to and delivers a strategy for process itself. Using the value chain to inform and unite people across the organisation, process has to be at the core of business strategy.
There are still too few examples of organisations whose strategic business intent and process strategy has the rigor and determination, management resource and internal process expertise to ensure success
The sub-optimal approach that most organisations take to process means their benefits and cost reductions are a fraction of what they should be. Extensively mapping the AS-IS, wrapping it up in “technology” and expecting the sanitised TO-BE that emerges to deliver anything but refined, introverted, silo functions is flawed thinking and execution.
Failure (or more likely a lack) of strategic intent will consign any process programme to the dustbin of change initiatives, rendering it unsalvageable for use by later management generations, well into the significant future.
Connectivity through the range of business change professionals engaged in pursuit of true process centricity requires a superlative level of organisation and is key to the strategy. Into the pot go business analysts, lean six sigma, project management, process modellers, process and performance management, business process transformers, systems and change expertise. Out should come the Centre of Process Excellence!
Serious strategic intent demands a programme implementation framework to engage staff throughout the organisation in the journey to end-to-end process.
